Places You Thought Were Safe
I’ve always taken great satisfaction in being a conscientious traveler who makes sure to plan ahead and conduct thorough study. However, even locations you believe to be secure can occasionally take you by surprise in the most surprising ways.
I recall visiting a serene European seaside village. The sort of location that is frequently highlighted in travel guides as a hidden treasure—calm streets, gorgeous scenery, and a feeling of peace. It was the ideal way to get away from the bustle of the city. I felt totally relaxed as I strolled down tiny cobblestone lanes and enjoyed the vivid sunset over the ocean.
But after supper one night, I made the decision to stroll slowly along the pier. I was engrossed in the beauty of the situation on this lovely night when there wasn’t many people around. I realized that I wasn’t completely alone when I saw a few folks hovering in the shadows. All of a sudden, a bunch of men with unknown intents came at me. With my heart pounding, I followed my instincts and hurried out, realizing how easily things could go from safe to unpleasant.
I was more taken aback by how unexpected that was. This was a calm town where I believed nothing could go wrong, not the bustling street of a major city. I discovered that occasionally a flash of insight is essential, even in the calmest environments. It served as a reminder that safety isn’t guaranteed anyplace; it all depends on being in the moment, following your gut, and knowing when to go.
It wasn’t a spectacular experience, but it altered the way I travel: always be on the lookout and follow your instincts, no matter where you are.
